7 Web Design Mistakes Costing Australian Businesses Enquiries

We audit dozens of Australian business websites every year, and the same conversion-killers show up again and again. None of them require a full rebuild to fix — but left alone, each one quietly leaks enquiries every single week. Here are the seven we see most.

1. No Clear Call to Action Above the Fold

Visitors decide in seconds whether to stay or leave. If your homepage opens with a vague headline like ‘Welcome to our website’ and no obvious next step, most will bounce. Every key page needs one unmissable action — ‘Get a Free Quote’, ‘Book a Call’, ‘Shop Now’ — visible without scrolling.

2. Slow Load Times

Heavy images, cheap shared hosting and bloated page builders are the usual culprits. If your site takes more than three seconds to load on a phone, you’re losing visitors before they’ve read a word — and Google notices too, since speed feeds into rankings. Compress images, ditch the sliders, and test with PageSpeed Insights.

3. Designed for Desktop, Barely Usable on Mobile

For most local businesses, over half of all visitors arrive on a phone — yet plenty of sites are still designed desktop-first and shrunk down as an afterthought. Tiny tap targets, text that requires pinching to read, and forms that are torture on mobile all kill conversions. Design mobile-first, not mobile-eventually.

4. Stock Photos Instead of Your Real Business

Nothing says ‘generic’ like the same smiling-headset stock photo used by ten thousand other companies. Real photos of your team, your work, your vans, your shopfront — even imperfect ones — build far more trust. Before-and-after shots are especially powerful for tradies and renovators.

5. Walls of Text Nobody Reads

Visitors scan; they don’t study. Break content into short paragraphs, descriptive subheadings and bullet points. Lead with the benefit to the customer, not your company’s history. If a paragraph doesn’t help someone decide to contact you, cut it or move it down the page.

6. No Trust Signals

People buy from businesses they trust, and your website has about ten seconds to earn it. Google reviews, testimonials with real names, industry memberships, guarantees, case studies with numbers — these are the proof points that turn browsers into enquirers. If you’ve got them, show them prominently. If you haven’t, start collecting them this week.

7. Contact Forms That Interrogate

Every extra field on your form costs you completions. Name, phone or email, and a message box is enough for most enquiries — you can ask the rest when you call them back. And test the form regularly; you’d be amazed how many businesses discover their form has been silently broken for months.

The Good News

None of these are expensive to fix, and the payoff compounds: the same traffic you’ve already got starts converting at a higher rate, which makes every dollar you spend on SEO or Google Ads work harder. If your website has three or more of these problems, a conversion-focused redesign usually pays for itself within months.
